Born to Lewis Randolph Bryan, Sr. and Martha Jane Shepard in Quintana, Texas, Lewis Randolph Bryan, Jr. (1892-1959) was a descendant of Moses Austin Bryan (1817-1895). After enrolling in the Virginia Military Institute and graduating from the University of Texas with a law degree in 1913, Bryan worked as an attorney in Houston for several years. Moses Austin Bryan, 1817-1895, became Stephen F. Austin's secretary in 1832. Bryan enlisted in the Texas army in 1836 and served at the Battle of San Jacinto. He was a member of the Somervell Expedition in 1842, and enlisted in the Third Texas Regiment during the Civil War.
